So I spent tonight with my mother and my sister having dinner and watching a movie.
Why am I telling you this? Because it was this movie:
I’ll admit, I had my doubts when I saw the DVD packaging, but its effects and the apparent forethought that went into them really took me by surprise. The dragon moved with a sinuous grace that was at the same time a little weird, probably because it was modeled after a sea snake or something- it swam through the sky though it had limbs, and its limbs just sort of seemed to be along for the ride. The plot was kind of cheesy, and the overall script/acting surprisingly unpolished for a film that was actually a theatrical release.
Despite, or perhaps because of all that, we still had a good time. One nitpick about the look and feel of the movie, though; the dragon was a bit… ferocious-looking for a children’s film, along with an Eastern dragon in general- it had a lot of spiky bits which I didn’t expect.
I mean, he didn’t have to be adorable or anything, but all those spiky projections on his face are pretty fearsome. The dragon occupies this odd space; it could easily go in either direction, whether totally monstrous or cuddly-sweet.
Since we were wondering when the dragon would show up and kick some butt, I did this:
Making the eyebrows look fluffy was harder than it had a right to be, and the scaling’s not where it could be, but I’m okay with this.
