I just walked in from playing Commander with some old friends, including one I hadn’t seen in nearly a year. It was quite good.
The Dragon Deck went 7-0 tonight, pulling out some crazy stabilize-and-win victories in Game 2 against Ghave, Guru of Spores and Game 1 (we only played 1 because it was suddenly 3AM) against Jhoira of the Ghitu (who is a simply insane Commander).
In the game against Jhoira, a Sol Ring powered out a Sphinx of Magosi several turns faster than it had any right to show up after I managed to Breath of Darigaaz away a Turn 3 Jhoira (after playing against her all night, I came to realize that she needed to be killed as soon as she showed up). the Sphinx kept drawing cards and tearing chunks out of my life total, and it was looking like I was going to have to chump the Sphinx with my Scion of the ur-Dragon just to buy a turn until my board got Distorting Waked, and while staring down the barrel of an 11/11 Sphinx, I transformed Scion into Malfegor (dumping it into the graveyard), and activated my Belbe’s Portal, dropping a Dragon Mage onto the table.
One turn later, Malfegor showed up thanks to an Unburial Rites, slipped on some electric shoes and swung for 18 over 3 turns, holding hands with Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius for the win.
Dragon Mage was also invaluable in pulling out the win, but if not for Malfegor’s trade-cards-for-death ability, that Sphinx would have eaten the Mage (and me) several turns sooner.
