I had the nagging feeling that the Interloper sketch from earlier this week was a little distanced from my original idea (which to be fair, wasn’t fully fleshed-out), so instead of figuring out how the chewing parts of its face worked, I decided to visit its overall silhouette and make sure that all the pieces fit where I wanted them to go:
I had wanted the following (and probably some other stuff that I’m not remembering) when I first came up with the idea:
- Multiple, small forelimbs.
- Large wings with draconic and insectile influences.
- A serpentine/quadrupedal stance.
- powerful legs- the creature should be able to leap into the air, and is physically powerful overall (see the large shoulders).
Right now, I’m thinking that I need to revisit it- I don’t think that I can fit all that in without changing it some- in the sketch at top, the tail is horter than I want, partially because of space constraints, partially because of the creature feeling unbalanced. If I made it longer, that might help fix it, as did looking more closely at how a grasshopper’s leg works.
It’s going an the proper direction though, so I will keep at it, but I’m also feeling like it’s a little too complex and the silhouette’s not as clean as it ought to be. Hmm.
You know this is my jam; I think tinkering with it can only be rewarding. Interloper is my favorite of your dudes.
Yeah, I’ve been kind of distracted and all over the place the last few months; I think it’ll be good to sit down and hammer something out.
And that comes as a surprise to absolutely no one, by the way. ;)
