You know what I haven’t done in a little over a year? Fretted about a hurricane.
You know what I also haven’t done in a little over a year? Come up with a Catastrophic Dragon based on a natural disaster (although I have come up with a new one in the last few months).
Since the East Coast (specifically the Northeast) is staring down the barrel of its second catastrophe-level hurricane in as many years, I figured I should come up with a dragon to celebrate commemorate the occasion.
Since as far as I know, most of the dragons from Eastern cultures have strong ties to water, it seemed like a reasonable connection to make. I didn’t have enough of a decent idea what “catastrophic hurricane energy” should look like, so for now, I cheated and focused on the face. As the “eye of the hurricane” is the safe zone, I toned down the amount of energy that came out of there, unlike the rest of the Catastrophic Dragons, the Hurricane Dragon has only a trickle of power coming from its singular eye.
Since a hurricane is something of a delicate occurrence, requiring pressure systems and temperatures to be just so, I wanted the dragon to have a porcelain look to it as well, perhaps like an angry bit of pottery. And after reading Wikipedia for a few minutes, I found that (sigh) tropical cyclones (or hurricanes to you and me) thrive on heat, and humanity’s misguided, puny proposed methods are not capable of stopping them, which might also inform my design choices going forward.
I do want it to have lots of arms for picking up things and throwing them, and am debating if it should be a tightly coiled spiral or not, but for now, I’m liking the way that this is turning out.
