Tonight, I had a breakthrough.
Doing the same subject matter over and over (see Monday’s post) has made me come to realize some of the things that I’ve been overlooking/downplaying in favor of what was easier/simpler, and how that has been not exactly hurting my art, but limiting it.
It’s like knowing how to speak a language, but willfully refusing to use past participles or something.
Anyhow, this isn’t a continuation of the “All is ash” piece from Monday, but it’s obviously in the same vein. Thinking about scales and details not strictly related to dragon morphology made me realize that I need to Pay More Attention. While I was working on it I came up with an awesome quote about pushing oneself, but I forgot it in the process. I looked at iguanas and alligators for inspiration on this one, and the vaguely geometric patterning on the iguana’s head struck me especially. Have to figure out a way to make it look less regular but not messy.
