While watching the Superbowl yesterday, my friend asked me “how do you keep coming up with ideas?” And I told him that sometimes it’s a bit of a journal, sometimes I reuse existing ideas, and sometimes I just plain phone it in.
I forgot to mention that sometimes a random idea, word or phrase will pop into my head and I’ll use that as an inspiration:
First off, the gamer crowd will recognize that I am paying some homage to Andrew Robinson’s Destructive Urge artwork. It’s also important to note that I did something a little similar of my own some 187 days ago, which forced me to look at reptilian eye shapes as well as the surrounding scale arrangements and so on.
This was a very useful exercise, and I cribbed a bit from this Horned Lizard image that I found on the internet back in 2008 and wish I could give proper credit for:
Though, I admit that I did get tired partway through and didn’t keep up the attention to detail that I’d have liked. That, and the geometric patterning of scales throws me sometimes; makes the carp issues I was having look simple. It’d probably have helped if I’d had more of an idea in mind than just the eye and surrounding ridge, the snout and frills kind of fell into place, but they could probably have been placed a bit better.
Anyway, that’s it for tonight; may you be able to draw inspiration from the most mundane and the least positive.
