My sister reminded me tonight that a friend of hers had suggested I come up with “Barnacles, oysters, or muscles [sic]. Definitely a dragon cover in barnacle like shells. Cause it would cut you with its skin and shoot salt water from each one.”
So my first (and admittedly somewhat off-target) reaction was to do a Benthic Dragon, but one that was supremely ancient, rising from some interminably long slumber, the feeble leavings of lesser beings calving away as it rose from the lightless depths…
I had originally thought of including fleeing whales in the background for scale, and I somehow left the boats in, which actually make it look a lot smaller than I had originally imagined it to be, something on the scale of Aspiochelone (that turtle/fish with an island on its back).
Then I realized that coral, barnacles, etc are mid-ocean dwelling organisms at best, and I should in fact probably be encrusting it with some sort of tube worm colony, among other less-identifiable things that lurk in the deep oceans (which, in the intereste of completeness, would also have to include glowing giant sharks). D’oh.
