So thinking about my attempts to recreate the Scion of the Ur-Dragon last night had me wondering about head shapes, particularly the head shapes that I tend towards to in my own repertoire.
I’ve examined this briefly once upon a time, but it bears repeating, if nothing else so that I repeat myself less, in a manner of speaking.
After thinking about it some, I think that the shape of the Scion’s head is based a little more on the shape of a crocodilian‘s head, which is a form that I rarely reference; I tend towards “lizard, sprinkled with snake and a healthy dash of making stuff up,” which is to say a short, wedge-like shape, where the crocodilian tends towards a flattened, longer wedge, something like an arrowhead. But still, it’s another reptile and would make a useful addition to the shapes of things.
I have a quote from Leonardo da Vinci somewhere about how one needs to draw upon existing forms in order to create convincing imaginary animals; if it weren’t so late right now and I could find it, I’d quote that.
Anyhoo, here are the quick studies I did while coming to this realization. They aren’t a whole lot, but it’s something, and there’s a sketch that I might come back to at some point in the future:
