Gen mentioned that seeing Friday night’s dragon made her want to know more about it. I didn’t have anything in mind; I just started drawing and stopped when I didn’t know what else to do.
So I decided that I would try this shadows n’ rendering thing with a dragon that I knew a bit more about:
I’ll admit, I didn’t start with the best lines, I sort of went forward boldly before I ogt bogged down in worrying over the Great Hollow Jaw Debate I was having with myself last summer.
I like how the shadows under the lip start to form planes of the jawbone (and I should have thought more about those as I did the linework), though I think that the drop shadows kind of flatten it out, and I wasn’t sure what to do about that. I never really thought of a texture for the Macejaw’s skin- I always kind of thought of them as “generic leathery,” or “not having prominent scales,” like a lot of the dragons I draw. I also decided once upon a time that they were a sort of greyish color, but hesitated to fill the drawing with a medium grey.
The shadows should probably have been starker and maybe even bigger, as it’s supposed to be staring determinedly into the light, but, baby steps.
