It’s been said before, and I’m sure that I’ve mentioned that expression at least once.
Without any other clear direction for tonight’s painting (which came on the heels of a strange, stressful day of Grown-Up Responsibility type things, no less) I decided that I would do just that.
I took last week’s painting and flattened it. Then I started painting over it, albeit on a new layer, which I suppose might not be 100% committed to the idea of killing darlings, but I had also decided that I would follow the First Rule of Improv, and not say no, or in this case, take anything away. All of my painting was additive, not subtractive, so I didn’t use the eraser. I did paint white into a few places when my very soft brush started to show up as a “halo” in places, but I tried to avoid erasures whenever possible.
I spent a little less than an hour (I was doing a few other things at the same time) working on this, but I’m happy with the results so far. I want to see what happens when I start adding lights to it, but I figure I ought to do more of the shadowy bits first.
And for comparison’s sake:
